Background
Dr. Ralph Smedley, Waverly, IL, started a club in 1924 in a California YMCA basement for practice & training in the art of public speaking & presiding over meetings, to promote sociability & fellowship for members. Smedley used the name Toastmasters Club in a pleasant, social atmosphere appealing to young men.
Interest grew rapidly, more clubs formed, and Toastmasters International incorporated in 1932.
Fox Valley Toastmasters 3399 chartered December 1970.
Toastmasters International opened to women in August 1973.
